As a Program Manager, Petra’s job at LIFT is to provide management, support, training and direction to LIFT-New York staff with special attention to member service quality and local volunteer management, training and service delivery. Petra works with LIFT’s national team and LIFT-New York leaders to work and track progress toward ambitious annual goals in line with the strategic growth plan. She provides supervision for Social Work Interns. She also works to implement and maintain appropriate operational infrastructure and procedures with the support of the Program Director and LIFT’s national office.
Petra LIFTs because she is committed to dismantling systems of power, privilege and oppression by investing in the dreams of the most marginalized as a strategy to co-create “un mundo donde quepan muchos mundos (a world where many worlds fit).”
Petra earned her Bachelors of Arts in Women’s, Gender & Sexuality Studies at SUNY New Paltz and a Masters of Social Work with a concentration in community organization, planning and development from the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College. As a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW), she believes that community organizing is one of the most liberating ways to create change.
As a Community Organizer, Petra has developed the leadership of East Harlem families to conduct parent-led literacy events for their children and mobilized an organizing committee in the South Bronx to teach community members how to read and write in their native Spanish language. At a campus of middle schools in the South Bronx, Petra developed systems and structures for school-wide improvement, deepened the capacity of school staff to engage with families as partners, and built the leadership and skills of parents to utilize their voice for positive change. Prior to joining LIFT, Petra managed the outreach, implementation and evaluation of anti-bullying initiatives including re-designing a virtual, youth program for high school students across America with a focus in one-on-one coaching and monthly leadership meetings.
