LIFT-DC Volunteer Recognized for Service, First Lady Michelle Obama to Speak at her Graduation

LIFT-DC's Bishara Addison, a senior at George Washington University (GWU), was recently featured in an article in The Washington Post for her service to the DC community, particularly in her role as a LIFT volunteer helping low-income families obtain economic security and pursue future life goals. Bishara is among the thousands of GWU students, faculty, staff, and community who pledged to complete 100,000 hours of volunteer service by May 2010 in exchange for First Lady Michelle Obama's participation as their graduation speaker, and succeeded in doing so.

Bishara Addison, a senior in political science, logged more than 300 hours this school year. She took an alternative spring-break trip and volunteered at LIFT-DC, a student-run nonprofit organization that helps low-income families find work, secure housing and apply for public assistance, among other services.

"I love the one-on-one client service. I love that I can build relationships with my clients," she said. "I love the small achievements and wins" she helps clients make.
