Ms. Smullens’ presentation provided additional tools to help foster an even more comprehensive understanding of the challenges faced by individuals from underserved communities, like LIFT clients, who may suffer from emotional abuse.
This awareness proved valuable for LIFT-Philadelphia’s corps of 90 college student volunteers, who benefited from a deeper psychological understanding of the clients with whom they work. By inviting experts like Ms. Smullens, LIFT-Philadelphia aims to provide higher quality service at a time when the Philadelphia community is particularly vulnerable due to the stark economic realities in the region.
