The following is an excerpt from her piece:
In my 18 months as Site Coordinator, I have helped over 135 members of the North Philadelphia community working with them to find stable employment, affordable housing, secure public benefits and find educational resources. Each small task a step forward in breaking the cycle of poverty for themselves and their families. In my job I have found a way to live out my dream of expanding opportunity and break cycles of poverty and oppression that can plague generations of families.
My experience has been a mixed blessing, a series of inspiring moments and disappointing setbacks, cycles of renewed idealism and crushing burnout that have left me with a more realistic perspective of answering the call to service...I have learned to channel the frustration, anger, and burnout into creating an effective transformative experience that will prepare our current college student volunteersto become the future leaders that will break the cycle and fight poverty on a much larger scale.
