NEW YORK VOLUNTEERS

LIFT-The Bronx recruits volunteers from Fordham University and Manhattan College. Volunteers come from a variety of gender, racial, ethnic, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds, as well as a broad range of academic majors including Political Science, International Political Economy, Urban Studies, Spanish, Psychology, Sociology, Communications, Finance, Marketing, Accounting and Mathematics,

Volunteers are required to donate four to 10 hours per week to client service. LIFT-The Bronx also provides additional leadership opportunities through its Student Director positions and leadership teams. Specific areas for additional responsibility include managerial roles in resource development, event planning, public relations, volunteer recruitment, advocacy, and community partnerships.

Members of leadership teams have the opportunity to:

  • Organize and execute LIFT's recruiting strategy for volunteers, including creating and distributing informational materials in university classrooms and at involvement fairs.  Volunteer Recruitment leaders also support Site Coordinators in planning and facilitating New Volunteer Trainings,
  • Coordinate press strategies and media outreach as part of the PR leadership team, including drafting press releases, contacting media about upcoming events, and disseminating updates to the LIFT-The Bronx regional network via email and social media.
  • Plan and conduct LIFT's client outreach, including strengthening referral relationships with community partners and advertising to clients in the community, collecting client feedback surveys, running LIFT's regular Client Advisory Board meetings, and executing the office's annual Client Appreciation Event.

Maryann Rosa age: 21

Maryann Rosa grew up in the Bronx, and upon entering Fordham University, she knew that she wanted an opportunity where she could give back to her neighborhood. “I wanted a volunteer experience where I could learn the roots causes of the issues that faced my community, and also something active that would provide me the training and resources to work with adults.” Now in her third year with LIFT, Maryann feels she has not only gotten to know her community better, but she has been able to give back at the same time.

Kristina Lepore age: 22

As a Spanish Language and Literature major at Fordham University, Kristina Lepore had taken numerous Spanish courses, but the one that brought her to the LIFT-The Bronx office is the one she will remember most.

In her junior year, Kristina enrolled in “Spanish and New York City,” a course founded by Fordham professors Dr. Viviane Mahieux and Dr. Carey Kasten, which requires students to apply their Spanish language skills within the context of Latino culture in New York City through a service-learning component.
