Why I LIFT

The WHY I LIFT campaign is an annual campaign in which LIFT volunteers across the country share their story of why they LIFT, share the LIFT mission with their friends, family, and colleagues, and raise funds to support their work. The WHY I LIFT campaign is designed to turn the megaphone over to volunteers, and let volunteers tell their stories unscripted and unedited.  Through the powerful act of storytelling, volunteers spread awareness about the realities of poverty, build a movement to combat poverty, and gain financial support which allows LIFT to serve more client families every year.

For volunteers, please review the important campaign details below, along with the PDF tutorial attached to this webpage which provides a step-by-step guide on creating your page on www.firstgiving.com/LIFT.

Key Campaign Details:

  • The campaign officially launches Wednesday, April 6th.
  • Volunteers’ web pages and stories will be reviewed Wednesday, April 27th to select which stories will be featured on MTV.com. Stories will be selected based on the quality of writing and how well volunteers have activated their networks to raise funds for LIFT. We encourage you to launch your web page as soon as possible and share it widely with friends and family members so that your story can be in the running to be featured on MTV.com!
  • A good tip to remember when writing your stories is that the best stories are the most personal stories! Share a meaningful experience you’ve had while at LIFT and how it motivates you to keep LIFTing.
  • Please keep in mind client confidentiality when writing your stories– change the name and identifiable characteristics of any client you might want to mention.
  • For questions on setting up your FirstGiving page, please contact LIFT’s Program Manager, Heather Decker, at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
