Cambridge - Two groups in Cambridge are offering free tax filing assistance to persons who meet the eligibility requirements.
Volunteers from National Student Partnerships (NSP) are providing assistance at the Cambridge Multi-Service Center at 19 Brookline St. Volunteers are trained and certified through the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program to prepare and file taxes for free. Tax assistance hours are Mondays, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesdays to Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Fridays, 9 a.m. to noon. For an appointment, call 617-349-6342.
The Cambridge Economic Opportunity Committee (CEOC) at 11 Inman St. is also offering tax filing assistance to income-eligible persons. CEOC is an IRS-certified VITA site that can prepare and electronically file federal and state income tax returns at no cost to the customer. Many people who work are also eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC or EIC). The CEOC can file basic tax returns, particularly for those with limited income, individuals with disabilities, are non-English speaking, or are elderly. Refunds also come back more quickly for taxes that are electronically filed. The CEOC also offers evening and Saturday hours for tax assistance and will make home visits for persons with disabilities. They also can, in certain cases, make home visits for elderly or disabled customers. Their language capacity includes Haitian Creole, Spanish and Portuguese. Hours are Mondays to Fridays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For an appointment, call 617-868-2900.
